This document introduces standards related to antibacterial and antiviral coatings and recommends antibacterial adjuvants ACTICIDE® DT, IOG, ZPD 1, and AGT 2 for antibacterial coatings.

Antibacterial and antiviral coating standards and solutions

The spread of the COVID-19 epidemic has led to a surge in demand for clean, antibacterial, and antiviral coatings. This document introduces solutions that meet authoritative standards, hoping to benefit the coatings industry.

Standards related to antibacterial coatings

1、 GB/T21866-2008 "Antibacterial Coatings (Paint Films) Antibacterial Property Determination Method and Antibacterial Effect"

Test strains: Staphylococcus aureus AS1.89 and Escherichia coli AS1.90

Antibacterial effect: As shown in Table 1 below, Class Ⅰ is suitable for places with high requirements for antibacterial performance, and Class Ⅱ is suitable for places with antibacterial performance requirements.

2、 HG/T3950-2007 "Antibacterial Coatings"

Test strains : Two bacteria (same as GB/T21886), six molds (Aspergillus niger AS3.4463, Aspergillus terreus AS3.3935, etc.)

Antibacterial and antifungal effects: As shown in Tables 2 and 3.

3、In August 2020, Guangdong Coatings Association released the group standard "Antibacterial and antiviral coatings"

4、In December 2020, China Coatings Industry Association released the group standards "Antibacterial and antiviral coatings" and "Test methods for antiviral performance of coatings (coatings)"

Antibacterial coating solutions

1. Powder coatings, high and low temperature baking paints, two-component PU systems, it is recommended to use THOR's ACTICIDE® DT. The active ingredients of DT are DCOIT and 1-phenoxy-2-propanol, which effectively prevent the growth of fungi on damp surfaces and products.

2. One-component self-drying solvent-based coatings, UV systems, ACTICIDE® DT and IOG can be used. ACTICIDE® IOG is a broad-spectrum bactericide with active ingredients IPBC and OIT.

3. Water-based self-drying, low-temperature baking systems, ACTICIDE® DT, ZPD 1, and AGT 2 can be used. ACTICIDE® ZPD 1 is a white dispersion with the active ingredient zinc pyrithione (ZnP). AGT 2 is a low-toxic and low-sensitivity silver ion bactericide that protects water-based products from bacterial, yeast, and fungal contamination and has a very broad bactericidal activity against bacteria, molds, and yeasts.

Test data

Tables 4 and 5 show the data of water-based two-component PU self-drying topcoats with ACTICIDE® ZPD 1 and DT added respectively, and the antibacterial rate reaches more than 99%, meeting the requirements of antibacterial coatings.
